To back up this point of view, the book is a design manual for residential streets, including drainage, intersection design, pavement, sidewalks, bike paths, etc. A municipality wishing to adopt the point of view of the book will find all the specs necessary to incorporate that point of view in its subdivision regulations.

When I saw this book, I passed it around to everyone influential I knew, and got the town planning department to order two more copies for people to borrow and read.

This book is a guide for the geometric design of residential streets. It promotes the design of residential streets that are an important part of the residential living environment, not just a conduit for moving vehicles. I often bring a copy to consultant and client meetings. The fact that it is published by the ULI in partnership with the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Institute of Transportation Engineers gives it enormous credibility. This often has an persuasive impact when campaigning for sensitive road design.
