- Discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each synthetic method or route, with scope, limitations, substrate compatibility and other important considerations
- Features numerous examples in the form of text, reaction diagrams, and tables.

Good Comprehensive Background Jan 11, 2008
By Eric Anderson
"chester"
This book provided the comprehensive background information on several explosives that I needed for a seminar and was unable to find packaged so conveniently elsewhere. Many other books shy away from publishing synthesis details for "security reasons". While a valid concern, I'm glad to find scholarly information out there and that the world hasnt become so paranoid about information as to "ban" useful books like this. The book will typically provide several syntheses (at least for the most important explosives like RDX) and inform the reader of which are industrially used, and which are more appropriate for lab or theoretical stufy. A basic understanding of organic chemistry is needed for this book, but nothing too extensive. The overview chapters early on are good refresher info.
A good synopsis. Nov 19, 2011
By Andrew This text is exactly what it claims to be - a good introduction and overview of a wide range of reactions used to produce energetic materials. Reaction conditions are explained briefly, with the authors inviting the reader to return to the primary research for full details. The breadth of the reactions discussed is impressive. Moderate knowledge of organic and energetic materials chemistry is assumed. Well worth the investment.
