Good reference book Feb 17, 2004 This is a very complete introduction book to laser spectroscopy. The thing I like best about this book is clarity. The author lays down basic principles of a set-up in one or two pages, supplemented with illustrations. First 5 chapters are about instruments. Then it is followed by 9 chapters of introduction of different types of laser spectroscopy. The last chapter contains several real-life applications of spectroscopy. The difference between 2nd and 3rd editions is small. I think only about 10-15 sections are changed. Very few changes in the first 12 chapters. Among the new stuffs, CRDS and frequency combing seem interesting. I skipped the update on the last chapter. I think there is no need to buy the new edition if your cash supply is limited.

Good reference book on spectroscopy Feb 14, 2001
By Ed Vin Soh This book contains most of the optical spectroscopic methods currently used. A highly recommended book for anyone who wants an introduction to research level spectroscopic methods.
DO NOT PAY MORE THAN 130 FOR THIS BOOK- NEW!!!!!! Jan 06, 2011

You can get this book (ed. 4) brand new in 2 parts for $170 here: 1) Laser Spectroscopy: Vol. 1: Basic Principles - $83 2) Laser Spectroscopy: Vol. 2: Experimental Techniques - $85
why would you pay more than the price of the new edition (un-used) to get an older edition which doesn't have everything the new one has?????? These people who asking for $400 are ridiculous.
A complete treatise of lasers and related subjects Apr 30, 2006
By Vahit Sametoglu The 3rd edition of this comprehensive book is revised, updated and extended. W. Demtr?der covers almost everything about laser spectroscopy in this voluminous masterpiece.
The book starts with basics of lasers, optical aspects of lasers. There is a large chapter allotted for laser instrumentation, for those who want to learn about the technical features. A lot of informative discussions are given in regards to generation and manipulation of lasers. Recent advances and innovations are also mentioned. A large bibliography accompanies the book, for those who want to delve into further details.
Diagrams are very useful in general. Not all mathematical derivations were given explicitly. The reader is assumed to have some fundamental knowledge of modern physics, optics and lasers. If you follow the book from the beginning to end, you will see that the subjects are built upon preceding sections, which is pedagogically useful.
This book is recommended to those who want to gain a general, comprehensive and profound comprehension of laser spectroscopy. For more detailed and focused topics, one needs to consult more specialized books.
Overall, this is an essential and high-quality book.
