Truly outstanding for self-study. Formal definition scarcity speeds progress, but occasionally necessitates outside reference. Oct 19, 2008
By Reader This is an excellent text for self-study or as a supplement to a classroom text. It is fairly wide ranging, covering a large portion of the mathematics needed during the first few years of an engineering, or physical science program. However, it is not quite comprehensive, lacking some areas that have gained significant importance in recent times, e.g, discrete transforms. Although some Fourier Series and transforms are covered in the companion volume "Advanced Engineering Mathematics".
The pretests and revision (more commonly called review in the US) sections are quite helpful. The book de-emphasizes formal definitions, as concepts and intuitive descriptions are provided in conjunction with examples. However, in some instances this can lead to problems, where the appropriate problem-solving approach is well-presented but the lack of a formal definition can lead to some "fuzziness". In these cases an inexpensive mathematics dictionary, or standard text, should provide the needed clarity.
Some sections or chapters are quite elementary and may not be needed by many readers. For example, the book starts with an approximately 70 page section on arithmetic which includes conversion between different number systems, e.g. octal, hex, decimal.
The book is well designed and laid out, avoiding the distracting overuse of color found in some competing texts. The authors are usually quite clear, and quickly get to the "meat" of a topic. Extra material is kept to a minimum. One section where this is not true is the Programme (sections) on Functions where unneeded, and arguably unhelpful, box graphics are introduced and used fairly extensively to visually denote the the ideas of function input and output. However, the boxes are not standard mathematical constructs for handling functions. In my opinion, these extraneous constructs are an unnecessary distraction, as the function notation carries with it all the structure needed for comprehension and the function notation is what students will see in later work. Hopefully, these boxes can be eliminated in later editions.
The book shows a much earlier publishing heritage as some mathematical terms no longer in common usage are still retained.
For a book this size, there are an unusually small number of errors or misstatements and these are usually obvious. One example where this is not true is when the authors use the terms "range" and "co-domain" incorrectly as synonyms.
This is an outstanding and well-written book. The book's presentation of desired learning outcomes, i.e., behavioral objectives, at the start of each Programme is excellent. Material is presented in easily digestible short sections that allow for breaks to be taken at almost any time, without the need to stop in the middle of an unfinished section. Pretest quizzes allow readers to determine what sections they can skip and what sections they need to work on. As there are very few required backward references, previously learned topics can be skipped without problem. A minor deficiency is the lack of more formal definitions. These are usually not needed. However, in a number of cases they would help aid understanding and reduce the chance of encountering unexpected problems in later work. However, the book's strong emphasis on carefully developing concepts needed to comfortably handle the mathematical manipulation and problem solving skills required for engineering is exceptional. I have no hesitation in giving it the highest recommendation.

EXCELLENT SELF TEACHING BOOK Jan 14, 2008
By Euriclee That's the book I use in my remedial math class because, contentwise, it's comprehensive and well organised. Its programmatic approach is very similar to the Kumon system: you have to master each frame before you can move onto the next, and complex topics are broken down to manageable chunks. The foundation topics (part I) roughly correspond to the maths skills a pupil should have mastered by the end of 6th form/grade 12. I would also recommend it to homeschooling parents who need to brush up on their maths skills and for their children too, because the prerequisites needed are fairly low; one should need only basic arithmetic and geometry in order to get the most of this book, as well as pupils preparing for their GCSE/AS/A level Maths. It's one of the best maths self teaching book one can find, but be aware it doesn't contain anything about abstract algebra, it's purely engineering maths.

By ? guy I have studied numerous mathematics texts, and I can say with absolute certainty that this is the finest mathematics text I have ever found.Unlike virtually every other technical math book out there(calculus, differential equations, integral equations, statistics etc)this book provides more than the dreary, boring, purely analytic approach (algebra,limits etc) that tends to practically wipe out true understanding. In my calculus class I hear questions whose answers are extremely masked by the highly esoteric mathematical bull@#$@, but which present themselves so easily with a simple picture.This book provides those pictures, but more remarkably it is written in such a way that people want to work through it (compared to those other books).In addition, this book has been shown (via experimentation) to significantly increase test scores (compared to standard lecture approach).

Great for the mathematically challenged Aug 20, 2010
By James Robert Deluze I'm now studying electronics engineering in my 60's. I did not take engineering as an undergraduate, for I did not feel I had a sufficient math background in high school. I wound up with a degree in Psychology and Theatre, went to medical school, and now I'm an inventor and need electronics engineering. I don't remember most math. A friend is a college professor of math. He previewed this book for about an hour and said it did not miss anything. He could not find a single important point left out. This first book goes from basic math through basic differential equations in about 1200 pages. Quite a feat! More advanced math is in the second volume. I then bought the book and find it readable and understandable. The concepts are concentrated in order to cover so much material in so few of pages. A great review for those who know math and need to fill "holes." For students like me, it does not miss anything. But that makes it concentrated, taking time to digest. But I have not had college math in over 40 years, yet I can understand it's concepts. Highly recomended.

Cuts through to the important stuff... Dec 17, 2007
By Sprout I was struggling through a statistics class at school, with a book that was nearly all words and very little in the way of specific mathematical examples. The author of that statistics book would spend several pages talking about an equation and then just glance over the example of it, or only show a very simplistic example, forcing you to figure out how to apply it in more complicated circumstances by yourself. Maybe it works for some people, but I learn by doing math, not by reading about it.
When I saw this book at my school's engineering department, I flipped through and saw the statistics section. About 70 pages of plain and simple math, with only a few very short paragraphs here and there to define or explain the concepts. It was exactly what I needed, so when I got home I went directly to amazon and ordered it. I figured it would turn out to be a good companion to my statistics text, but it was my stats book that was the companion to this book instead!
The rest of the book follows the same format, and covers a huge amount of content. I plan on keeping this book on my shelf to refer to whenever I need assistance in anything math-related.
