1No good information  Jul 17, 2006 By Daniel S. Moroney "Dan M"
All this book is, is a bunch of recycled articles from Fine Homebuilding. The articles are random, not related and relatively hard to follow due to lack of photos. It was a waste of money and didn't provide me much insight for my planned addition.

FYI...this applies to all of the "for pro by pros" which are written "By the editors of Fine Homebuilding".

1Don't Buy, Don't Buy  Sep 28, 2009 By Horse
This book is, as the kids say, terribad.

I own this book and keep waiting to install a fireplace, so I have a use for it.

It opens up about how to add onto a foundation and gives you a small amount on that, and then simply shows you some projects.

I am not up to East Coast code requirements, but I would never publish some of this advice.

On page 33 it shows embedding wood beams into concrete, held down buy joist hangers that extend down into the concrete. Really? Joist hangers and wood embedded in concrete?

First joist hangers ARE NOT HOLD-DOWNS and probably are the same price, so why not use the correct product?

Second, I would NEVER recommend wood to be cast in concrete, it's just going to rot. Even P.T wood will rot, and will additionally chemically react with the concrete. (Even rebar reacts with concrete and corrodes, it's not just from rusting)

I found that mistake in about 2 minutes just now, while skimming it.

Furthermore the projects are shown in a general, very vague way.

It's more an idea book with a couple articles about hanging drywall, cutting rafters, etc.

Recommended for: The starting a fire.

4Really good information  Jul 08, 2008 By Keith R. Snyder
I bought this book when I was rebuilding a back porch that had completely deteriorated because it wasn't built right in the first place, and I didn't want to make the same (or other) mistakes. I have a construction background in drywall, but not much in carpentry. Very helpful book. I'm a big fan of the For Pros by Pros series, since they always have so much information about the Why behind the good, and many times advanced, techniques that can help the beginner do a great job.
