With the widespread alarm over food quality in recent years, and with the growth of the organic movement and its mainstream acceptance, perceptions are changing. The qualitative aspect of food is on the agenda again, and in this context Steiner’s only course of lectures on agriculture is critical to the current debate. With these talks, Steiner created and launched "biodynamic" farming—a form of agriculture that has come to be regarded as the best organically produced food. However, the agriculture Steiner speaks of here is much more than organic—it involves working with the cosmos, with the earth, and with spiritual beings. To facilitate this, Steiner prescribes specific "preparations" for the soil, as well as other distinct methods born from his profound understanding of the material and spiritual worlds. He presents a comprehensive picture of the complex dynamic relationships at work in nature and gives basic indications of the practical measures needed to bring them into full play. These lectures are reprinted here in the "classic" translation made by Rudolf Steiner's English interpreter, George Adams. This edition also features a preface by Steiner's colleague the medical doctor Ehrenfried Pfeiffer, as well as eight color plates. This is the course that began the biodynamic movement. This is the essential work for anyone wanting to understand and use Steiner's methods of food production. | | | |

Biodynamic Farming May 16, 2011
By Vicki Ruzicka
"Voracious Reader"
Written by the genius himself, Rudolf Steiner argues for a completely natural way to grow plants. Some of his ideas are esoteric and seems a bit "out there," but they've been proven to work. Growing anything biodynamically requires some serious labor intensity. There are wineries in France using these methods -- say, planting grapevines during a certain phase of the moon -- and their wines are considered the best in the world. Be prepared to be blown away. Steiner was way ahead of his time.

Eye Opener !!! Dec 19, 2010
By El Pescador I been reading this book more than one time and still amazed at the knowledge offered to us. We can apply these principles to our gardens to recover the fertility of our soils around the world, a great book !!!

Was worth the read Dec 24, 2011

"Its a Wonderful Life"
We own a 22 year old vineyard and have been organic for over 6 years and now moving toward Biodynamic. We learned a lot from this book and the right way to do many things. It told us that we were doing things right and how to continue to move toward full biodynamic farming. I now am the proud owner of cows and will be following the outline in this book for years to come. Worth reading.

An interesting, but difficult read Apr 10, 2012
By D.R. Schneider This book is a series of lectures translated from German done by Rudolf Steiner, the founder of the biodynamic reading. I bought the book because I am interested in viticulture and had heard there were vineyards that use the biodynamic method successfully. It is dense reading and difficult to relate to agricultural practices in the modern day. Much of what is discussed is almost mystical in nature and some of it quite bizarre. (notably stuffing cow horns with manure and then burying them) I found it interesting reading, but the translation is not very readable. I will have to read more modern books about this technique to understand it better. I could not recommend this book on its own. I would read a more modern book first and then if interested, might get this one for a historical perspective.

BEWARE!!!!!!! Mar 14, 2012
By Wesley Hayden I came accross Biodynamic gardening a year ago, I bought the 2012 biodynamic growing guide to practice it and test its merits, So far so good! Ive been reading about the geometry related to planetary cycles and how they govern the plant world (something cullpepper was aware of way before Steiner) and is the main thing that interested me in wanting to find out more about this growing movement. However, after digging a bit deeper into the foundations of what priciples biodynamic gardening rest upon, I was a bit embarassed to learn it is a faith based gardeneing method with a twist, biodynamic preps are actually more akin to voodoo, magic or even witchcraft than proven methods (scientificly in explanation at least) If you think that burning the skin of mice and spreading the ashes is less method and more ritual, some other strange things become aparent, including my learning about Rudolf Steiner's reliance on his clarvoyance and contact with the spirit world to influence these "famous" lectures made me take a step back, I am growing more skeptical about biodynamic agriculture as a long term remedy for saving the world from pollution (organic gardening has always preached this anyway) and where are all the horns hoofs and mice skin going to come from when everyone decides biodynamics is the way forward????? At least read this before you jump in feet first! [...]
